POSITION: Data Analyst Intern

COMPANY: Kenya Red Cross Society

LOCATION: Nairobi

 

Overall Purpose

The Data Analyst Intern will play an important role in assisting the Research Unit to reach its objectives in the generation of research knowledge for evidence-based decision making in the Humanitarian sector.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Database design
  • Identifying data sources, collect information/data on District/County level indicators.
  • Assist in managing core datasets through data gathering, coding, and cleaning
  • Access and prepare data for use by other teams
  • Active participation in the design and maintenance of contextualized datasets for ongoing research assignments
  • Assist in preparation and presentation of core data
  • Assisting in desk research on topical issues and through literature and policy reviews in readiness for analysis.
  • Maintaining an awareness of the landscape and debates on data in the humanitarian sphere and flag this the research team.
  • Contributing to ICHA research papers, reports, and blogs.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • An undergraduate qualification in the field of data science, statistics, scientific research, econometrics, mathematics, computer science or similar discipline.
  • Any technical certificate in a related discipline is desirable.

 

Desired Competencies

  • Working knowledge of statistics and statistical software R, Stata, SPSS
  • Demonstrable interest in socio-economic development
  • An inquisitive open mind and the ability to think outside of the box.
  • A determined, agile, pragmatic and patient approach to problem-solving.
  • Good communication skills, both verbally and in writing

JOB NUMBER TWO

 POSITION: Climate Research Intern

COMPANY: Kenya Red Cross Society.

LOCATION: Nairobi

 

Overall Purpose

This role will support climate science and related social science research and project implementation in the International Centre for Humanitarian Affairs (ICHA), an establishment of the Kenya Red Cross Society.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support on climate science for implementation of various ongoing/ upcoming projects related to forecasting based early warning early action, climate services, and climate science research.
  • Support engagement with key institutions and actors at both the national and county levels.
  • Support project documentation, reporting, and development of publications.
  • Provide administrative support such as organizing meetings, stakeholder communication and follow up.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team working on research related to climate science, climate change, and disaster risk management/reduction.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in climate science, meteorology or climate change.
  • Relevant practical experience in working on research and research projects.

 

Desired Competencies

  • Interest in inter-disciplinary work and profound interest in understanding the use of climate science for risk reduction and management.
  • Good ability to organize small workshops and conduct interviews and focus groups.
  • Excellent English writing skills with the ability to author reports, policy briefs, and working/academic papers.
  • A strong and reliable communicator able to coordinate and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work independently and under the supervision of Project Manager – Climate Research.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Experience in working on disaster risk reduction projects, wider climate change, and sustainability will be an added advantage.

POSITION: GIS Intern

Overall Purpose

The GIS Intern will play an important role in assisting the Research Unit to reach its objectives in the generation of research knowledge for evidence-based decision making in the Humanitarian sector

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collection and analysis of geospatial data from openly available resources
  • Earth observation imagery acquisition, cleaning and information extraction e.g. spectral indices, time series analysis from both commercial and open datasets e.g. LANDSAT, sentinel 1
  • Analyzing disasters from spatial datasets using open platforms such as QGIS, google earth engine, R, python
  • Generation of well-designed outputs in the form of tables, graphs, and maps for better communication and decision making using open tools
  • Storing spatial data in databases using open source database management systems e.g MySQL, MongoDB
  • Automation of spatial analysis workflows in QGIS, R, Python
  • Collection of field data using open data toolkit

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in geo-information or any other related field with a relevant academic experience

 

Desired Competencies

  • Proven competence in using open source GIS application software e.g QGIS, Python, R
  • Collection of spatial data using open data kit open map kit will be an added advantage
  • Programming and automation of spatial processes using GIS programming e.g. R, python
  • Familiarization of big spatial data using google earth engine
  • Intermediate knowledge of statistical open-source statistical software
  • Intermediate knowledge in using open source database management systems will be an added advantage
  • Knowledge of creation of visualization dashboards will be an added advantage
  • Good cartographical skills using graphic design software e.g. Inkscape will be an added advantage
  • Good English writing, reporting and communication skills
  • Experience working in a humanitarian organization will be an added advantage
  • Eagerness to learn new skillsets
